Parchment paper (optional)
Pastry brush
- 1 cup warm milk about 110°F or 45°C
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup unsalted butter softened
- Additional melted butter for brushing optional
In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
Add 2 cups of flour, salt, egg, and softened butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, ¼ cup, until a soft dough forms.
**Knead the Dough:** Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elas
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined or lightly greased baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
Cover the shaped rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for about 45 minutes, or until puffy.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove the rolls from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter for a soft, flavorful crust
Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with your favorite meal.
- Vegan Adaptation: To make these rolls vegan, substitute the milk with plant-based milk (such as almond or coconut milk), replace the butter with coconut oil, and use a flaxseed mixture as an egg substitute.
- Adding Herbs and Spices: Incorporate herbs and spices into the dough to enhance the flavor. Fresh or dried herbs like Italian seasoning or spices like nutmeg or cinnamon can add a delightful twist.
- Make-Ahead Option: After shaping the rolls and placing them on the baking sheet, you can refrigerate them for up to 2 days before baking. Allow them to come to room temperature for about 2 hours before baking as directed.
- Freezing: To freeze unbaked rolls, place the shaped dough balls on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer them to a freezer bag and store them for up to a month. When ready to bake, thaw the rolls, let them rise until puffy, and bake as directed.
